Joseph Rowntree was born at this property in 1836 above the original family run Rowntree shop which is now a Pizza Hut Restaurant. This Victorian Grade II listed building located on Pavement in the centre of York opposite the Shambles, has recently been fully restored to its former glory.
Rowntree House is the tallest building on this side of Pavement, so called because it was the first paved street in York. You can see the awnings of the Rowntree Family grocery store in this picture.
